"Not so many," came his quiet reply.

Even in beneath the shadow of where they lingered, his eyes could too perceive certain things. He could see the wandering of her eyes, and he knew she sought for their eyes to meet. So he lifted a gentle hand up beneath her chin to guide her wayward gaze.

"I imagine there are many who try to warm yours."

At his touch, her heart quickened, which she was sure he could feel as they still stood nearly plastered against each other. It was then, that her barrier began cracking, letting the light of the outside world peak in.

A fluttering of her eyes as they adjusted to the light and then she couldn't help but stare into his own. Gods, he was beautiful.

"Not so many," she finally found her voice.

Crack-crack-crack.

Light splintered against the darkness and sand from the storm began streaming in to fill the space that had protected them. If they didn't get out quick enough, they'd be buried up to their necks.

As light began to peek through, there was an honesty in her eyes that became betrayed by it. The same could be found his his gaze, and he found himself far more envious of her countenance than he had been in times past. He mused that in the midst of much beauty, it was easy to overlook the one. But he wondered how he'd so easily missed what he came to see now. And then, after hesitating for only a moment further, he relinquished the moment to time and began to usher her out from their place.



The people here were far from unfamiliar with the nature of the desert. Sand storms were not terribly frequent here, but they were common enough to the locals were more than prepared to deal with the aftermath. However, as many murmurings would come to be heard first, one of such intensity had not been seen here for as long as the collective memory served. It was out of the ordinary, and it was seen as a bad omen.

Still, the imperials had yet to be made unwelcome by the people. But Ashuanar was wary of the alleged spellcaster Kailyn had spoke of, and as he led her to regroup with his men and hers, he spoke to her.

"You will have to keep an eye out for this sorcerer. We cannot say for sure he is to blame for this, but I'm inclined to believe you're right about him..." he said, his voice trailing away as he looked to her.
